Direct-to-home (DTH) satellite systems have five major components: programming sources, a broadcast center, satellites, satellite dishes, and receivers. The broadcast center receives signals from programming sources, compresses the signals digitally, encrypts them, and beams the signals to satellites.

DTH (Direct-To-Home) connection is a satellite service. A DTH subscriber's installation consists of a dish antenna two to three feet (60 to 90 centimeters) in diameter, a conventional TV set, a signal converter placed next to the TV set, and a length of coaxial cable between the dish and the converter. The dish intercepts microwave signals directly from the satellite.

DTH stands for Direct to Home, which we receive through a dish that is affixed on the rooftop of our homes or workplaces. Whereas, OTT (over-the-top) content is whatever we watch online.

Direct-to-home (DTH) Broadcasting Service refers to the distribution of multi-channel TV programs by using a satellite system. The TV programs is encoded into a digital stream of “0” & “1” in binary data and provides TV signals direct to subscribers' premises.

PEMRA has issued DTH distribution service licence to M/s Shehzad Sky in Pakistan. Two more licences will also be issued soon. Shahzad Sky is a subsidiary of Shahzad International, and was licensed by PEMRA to set up DTH distribution service in Pakistan. It aims to provide highest quality services to customers across the country. It distribution service will be available for subscription very soon.

The main benefit of DTH service, this work on single channel and subscriber do not require to buy new television with more channels. We can change channel through the set-top box of DTH service. With DTH service anybody can get high quality digital signal on the television. DTH is very useful in the remote locations where the poor quality signal of television. DTH also give us best sound and clear picture quality. With DTH service we can select the channel programs as our choice. The traditional cable TV operator give us service with the choice of the own channels but with DTH service, subscriber can chooses own package or channel as choice. We can pay the subscription fee online through net-banking, voucher recharge or credit card. Sometimes during heavy rains, we cannot clear signal or no signal to view any channel. This is the major problem for the subscribers of DTH (Direct-To-Home) service. Another major problem is that we cannot change our service provider. If any service provider gives us service badly and then we cannot shift to another as the set top box settings are only linked with the same service provider. If we want to change the service provider, then we should need to pay additional cost to buy new set top box from new service provider.

DTH service licensee of PEMRA will set-up price of the receiver as per the cost of the equipment.
